Gaura, from from the Greek gauros meaning superb, proud or majestic. After Lindheimer (1801-1879), the first permanent-resident plant collector in Texas.
Botanists recently reclassified as “Oenothera” from the Greek “oinos” and “theras“, meaning “wine-seeker”, which refers to an ancient use of the plant in scenting wine.
